Shotcrete day is so exciting for our families because the pool finally starts to become real! After weeks or months of planning, HOA, permits, & financing paperwork, the pool is quickly becoming a reality!

Customers often ask about the difference between gunite & shotcrete. Gunite is a dry process to blow sand and cement with a large air compressor specifically utilized in the pool industry. Water is added at the nozzle to make the cement sticky while being shot in place. Gunite is easily formed by the crew in the pool, and remains easy to manipulate for hours. The long-term strength of gunite is highly defendant on the amount of watering (Hydration) that is required several times each day for the first week. You can literally see the sand and cement soaking up the water like a sponge.

Shotcrete is a wet process where concrete is delivered to the site in a traditional barrel truck or mixed on demand in a volumetric mixer truck. It is pumped using a special concrete pump down the high pressure line, and air is added at the nozzle to aerate the mixture into a spray. Due to the high pressure lines and clogging / sand-packing, Shotcrete is considered by the crews to be more dangerous. It also cures faster reducing the time to shape and form. Shotcrete is easy to identify with the large pits and rocks present in the finished surface. Shotcrete is recognized as stronger and used for vertical construction including buildings, overpasses, tunnels, and for retaining walls. Shotcrete should still be hydrated to help reduce concrete shrinkage.
