Swimming Pool Excavation

Swimming Pool Excavation Process

Hi, I'm Mark with the MedHawk Minute, and today we're going to be talking about excavation.

An excavation is the most important part of the pool process. Not only do we need to plan where we're going to put the pool in the yard, how far away it is from the house and the fence, but also the way we dig the pool is critically important. So we can look at the example of a Solo Cup as a metaphor for our pool. And what provides the Solo Cup with its strength is the lip around the outside edge. And just like this lip, we're going to do the same thing around the inside of the pool, and we call that the bond beam. So around the outside edge of the bond beam, we're going to provide extra rebar and we're going to dig that box, a foot by a foot so that we've got plenty of shotcrete and plenty of rebar around there to make our pool strong just like this Solo Cup.

One of the things we need to check is really the depth of our benches, bath and our sun shelf area. When you look at the forms here, this represents the top of the beam, but your water line's going to be about three inches lower. Remember you've got that waterline tile here. And then we also need to compensate for about eight or nine inches of shotcrete here. And so that way this sun shelf's going to end up being nine inches of water and about 12 inches down from form.

One of the important things is that we've got a really expansive soil here in the Dallas area, and we want to make sure that we've got a good insulator between the bottom of the pool cell and the dirt. So we go ahead and put in this kind of gravel here, and this is really important to provide that insulating layer, also provides a place for any water to go underneath the pool cell.

Thanks for joining us, and we'll see you next time on the MedHawk Minute.
