Swimming Pool Plumbing

Swimming Pool Plumbing Process

The key to proper plumbing really starts with the drains. We need a large enough diameter pipe in order to move the water that the pump is going to suck in in order to feed all of the accessories and the spa jets and everything that's going on inside the pool.

So here we've got the two main drains. They've got 2 1/2 inch plumbing come off the tee, and we've got 2 inch plumbing connecting them together. It's important that these drains be set at least 36 inches apart so that no one ever got sucked to the bottom or got injured by the plumbing itself.

So after the water gets sucked out of the main drains, it goes through the pump, through the filter, the heater, and then gets returned back to the spa. This particular spa has 11 jets, so we've only got a finite amount of water flow, and the more jets you have, you divide that pressure by the number of jets. So that's why the proper size plumbing is critically important.

So this is the spa jet body. Water travels in the bottom pipe, and the blower air travels in the top pipe. And when you turn on the blower and the pump, they mix together to provide you a strong jet.

So these are the skimmers, and this is another area where the pool sucks from. So not only do you have the dirt on the bottom of the pool that you want the main drains to suck, but you also have anything floating on top of the surface that you want sucked through the filter and cleaned as well. So that skimmer is grabbing any of that surface debris and pulling it away.

So while we're talking about plumbing, another thing that happens at this stage is we go ahead and install all the lighting. So you can see these pipes that are sticking out into the pool will eventually house the lights that shine across the pool. And then these are going to be lit bubblers, where we actually have lights coming up with the water at the same time.

So even if you have a flush spa and a pool, there's still two totally separate bodies of water. And customers are constantly asking us if you can heat both at the same time. And really, the amount of equipment it would take would cost you twice as much if we had two heaters and two pumps. So really, the way the system works is there's a set of valves that switch back and forth, and you can either heat the pool or heat the spa, but most people can't do both at the same time.
