Swimming Pool Plaster Day 1 / Episode 7

So, plaster's very similar to the concrete truck in the shotcrete video that we saw earlier. He's going to mix up all the special chemicals that go in to make this plaster batch. And we're going to pump it down the line to the guys out in the pool. So this is the slurry box. It's kind of like a concrete washout. Any excess material left over, they're going to put in here. And then they're going to come pick it up day two. Okay, so when the material travels down the hose, it goes through the nozzle and in the pool. And he's going to go ahead and spray a light coat on there. So once they spray the material on the wall, they're going to trowel it. This material has the elements of plaster, which is kind of like the glue. And then you have all the aggregate or rock inside the plaster mix.

So we want to pressure that in and we want to compact that material as much as possible so that we can reduce the amount of plaster and glue, and increase the amount of rock on the wall. And that's going to give us that durability that's going to last closer to 20 years. So the stairs are one of the hardest parts. Because you're trying to get them just perfect and there's so many complex turns. You're trying to compact that material in. At the same time, get a fine finish. So they'll put the material on, let it dry for a little bit. Come back, work it a little bit more, and keep working it as it's drying. Okay, so the spa and spa floor are one of the most difficult areas. You can see he's working a confined space. He's got all these benches to float perfectly smooth.

Then he's got to finish the floor and the bottom and then trowel his way out. You can see they wear special boots with little spikes on them in order to hold your weight up off the ground. Then at the very end, they're going to have to go trowel in all those little spike holes as well. So once they get done troweling there, they're going to use one of these wands and they're going to wash off the excess plaster off of the aggregate. And then they're going to keep smoothing it and troweling it and keep washing it off until you start to see the actual rock finish start to show through. So they just rolled out this plastic on the floor, so that way they can be washing the walls without washing off the material on the floor. They'll get to that part at the end.

We're getting plaster on nine pools this week. So we're going to jump over to Abbey for day two. We'll see you next time on the MedHawk Minute.
